 Bill Murphy was born on Staten Island, New York, in 1952. He is a product of the New York City Public School System and received a BFA from NYC's School of Visual Arts (1975) and an MFS from Vermont College (1996). He has also studied at the Art Students League and the Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.

He has taught at Wagner College since 1984, currently as Professor of Visual Arts; he was Chair of the Art Department from 1998 through 2003.

Murphy's work has been exhibited in over 100 group, juried, and one person exhibitions throughout the world. His work is included in many national and international collections, including the Library of Congress, the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Public Library, and the New-York Historical Society. In NYC his work is represented by the Old Print Shop.

"I am a realist artist who works in the mediums of printmaking, drawing and painting. More specifically, I work in etching, ( mainly etched line, drypoint, and aquatint), lithography (from the stone), watercolor, oil paint, graphite and charcoal.

My subjects are found in the world around me. I find 'the fact' far more interesting, wonderful and strange than anything I can summon up from my imagination.

for a one-day large woodcut printing session.

We will be using BIG INK's mobile 48" x 96" etching press to pull prints.
Weather permitting, Big Ink, with MGC, will be printing outside,
as part of the Hell's Kitchen FLEA MARKET on 39th Street
between Ninth and Tenth Avenues in NYC. If the weather turns rainy,
then we will work in the MGC studio.

Artists will have two months prior to the event to carve their image into a piece of plywood. BIG INK remains in contact with each participant providing guidance and technical support when needed.

Tracklights: MGC Member News
Thanks to all the MGC artists who participated in printmaking demonstrations during our Open house on Saturday, September 10th and all who contributed to our prints on display. We celebrated the MGC faculty with the ongoing group show To the Limit.Member volunteers answered questions from visitors, showed off the facilities, and served up some refreshment goodies. All in all, a successful meet and greet, for the benefit of our workshop home in mid-town Manhattan.

Monika De Vries Gohlke has her prints included in a group show, with six other botanical artists, at the Arader Galleries San Francisco. The exhibit is called Outside in: Contemporary Natural History Artworks and is on view now through October 12, 2016.

Robin Dintiman is exhibiting her work in Election 2016, The Best of Times, The Worst of Times, a juried show at the Printmaking Center of NJ at 440 River Road, Branchburg, NJ.

Jasmine Graf is showing her work in paper, print and experimental techniques at the Rutgers University's Robeson Campus Center in Newark, NJ. Articulations: Jaz Graf includes various combinations of media, installations, sculptural paper and drawings. Jaz writes: "I am inspired by languages, nature, human nature, and the practice of play. Confronting dualities is part of my work; understanding relationships which are oppositional and contradictory yer indivisibly connected. I explore boundaries... This periphery is often where conflict can be confronted, and/or synergy can be developed." The show, curated by Adrienne Wheeler, will be on view until July 31, 2017. A reception will be held on Thursday, October 20 from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibition is located in Engelhard Hall, First floor, at 190 University Avenue in Newark.

The Art of the Chop at Inky Editions Inc.Celebrating the first year of the workshop in the Hudson Valley, the print shop Inky Editions is presenting two exhibitions that occupy the entire space. Art of the Chop has been organized by artist and master printer Lisa Mackie, and showcases prints using a wide range of techniques, resulting from her many collaborations over a 40 year career. Artists included are Lamar Briggs, Marilyn Dintenfass, Grace Hartigan, Emily Mason and many others. Earth/River River is the title of an installation/environment created by Mackie, also now on view, that incorporates mixed media sculptural objects, moving images, printing and painting. George Tsalikis, who established IE in 2015, is a former MGC scholarship artist. Both shows continue to October 30, 2016. INNERVISIONS: New Prints 2016/Summer

In this expansive selection of new work in printmaking at International Print Center New York, the juror, artist Dan Walsh, reviewed over 2000 submissions from more than 800 artists and has chosen 54 works by 50 artists from 16 states and 10 countries. MGC artists and instructors Douglas Collins and Takuji Hamanaka are included in this selection. In this excerpt from the organizer's comment on the theme, "Innervisions proposes the idea of how the medium of printmaking, for all its mechanical and physical methodologies, innately and naturally lends itself to express expansive and interior visions...". "Prince of Prints" - James Grashow at CCP
A show of the printmaking achievements of James Grashow, woodcut artist, sculptor
and installation creator, is on view at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking
(CCP) in Norwalk, CT, from September 10 to December 10, 2016. Grashow's woodcuts, which often depict strong narrative or editorial content and use a highly imaginative figuration, have been widely published and appeared in major periodicals, including

at Process Space Artists-in-Residence on Governors Island
Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Open Studios Final Weekend
Mary Ting will exhibit her printmaking, mixed media and sculptural installation artwork, often focused on endangered species in the animal kingdom, during the final weekend of the LMCC Process Space Program, Building 110 on Governors Island, on this Saturday September 24 and Sunday, September 25, from 12:00-5:00 pm. Her work in the program continued the direction started during her artist residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans.
Mary's work can also be seen in ENDANGERED!, a group show at John Jay College Presidents Galery located at 899 Tenth Avenue at 59th Street, opening on November 16, 2016, with a talk about criminal syndicates involved in the poaching of wild life. The show will include art by Nick Brandt, Sue Coe, Joel Sartre and Brent Stapelkamp.

The Alternative Press and Zine Collection at the NYPL has been expanding since the 1960s and the current display is a selection of recent acquisitions documenting the Occupy movement and other forms of social justice activism, which attempt "to equalize the production, distribution and consumption of information". The display will be on view until January 18, 2017.
Exhibition Opportunities
The Contemporary Print 2017, the 4th annual juried national exhibition will go on view during PrintAustin 2017, January 10 to February 18, 2017, at the O2 Gallery at Flatbed Presss Headquarters, Austin TX. Submissions must include traditional print media as their primary technique. The juror will be Susan Tallman, art historian, editor in chief of the journal and website Art in Print, and currently teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Entries must be submitted by October 1, 2016.

Delta National Small Prints Exhibition (dnspe) is requesting submissions for its juried exhibition to take place at the Bradbury Art Museum of Arkansas State University from January 26 to February 26, 2017. The 2017 Wheaton Biennial: Printmaking Reimagined will be a juried exhibiiton at the Beard & Weil Galleries at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, planned for March 1 to April 10, 2017. The Gallery Director, Michele L'Heureux, has issued a call for entries of work that "pushes or reconsiders the boundaries of printmaking". Submissions are due by November 15, 2016.
